Yamanashi Prefecture is known for being the top producer of peaches in Japan. Among the regions in Yamanashi, the Kyoto area (Koshu City, Yamanashi City, Fuefuki City) is particularly renowned for its high-quality peaches. Last year, when I went to pick Shine Muscat grapes in the Katsunuma area of Koshu City, I remember seeing a significant number of peach trees. Katsunuma is famous for its grapes, but it also has a strong reputation as a peach-producing area.
This time, I visited Kaikoen, located about a 10-minute drive from Katsunuma IC. Under a roof covered with grape vines, let’s enjoy peaches chilled in cold water. The peach variety in season now is Hakuto, known for its top quality. I indulged in the sweet aroma and juicy peaches, eating enough to last for two years.
Don’t forget to bring a towel as the peaches are very juicy.
The peach picking plan includes picking peaches and Delaware grapes to take home as souvenirs. We were taken to an orchard across the road where we could pick our favorite peaches and Delaware grapes.
When you actually pick the peaches, you’ll notice that the branches are densely packed with fruit. The phrase “as if they were attached” fits perfectly, and it even feels a bit strange. When picking, you gently separate the fruit from the branch with both hands, and it comes off easily with a snap. It takes about an hour and a half to get from Odawara or Kaisei in Kanagawa Prefecture to Katsunuma in Yamanashi. Beyond Mount Fuji lies a kingdom of fruits. The season for fresh fruit is short. For the next few weeks, we can enjoy peaches, but after that, it will likely switch to grapes. I look forward to visiting again for grape picking.
