Finished the suburban bus tour from Bangkok. The bus returned to the Chit Lom subway station around 1 PM.
In this area, Bangkok’78 has received high praise.
Even approaching the restaurant, there is only a hotel called Sindhorn Midtown Hotel Bangkok. It seems that Bangkok’78 is located inside the hotel.
The restaurant is located on the second floor of the hotel. As you enter the urban and sophisticated building and approach the restaurant, a spacious area unfolds with disco music playing.
When you sit at the table, the cushion of the chair sinks in, providing comfortable seating. Bangkok’78 is named after the golden era of Bangkok in the 1970s, particularly 1978 when the Asian Games were held in Bangkok.
Bangkok’78 specializes in dishes that are commonly eaten in Bangkok, such as Tom Yum Goong, Pad Kra Pao (Thai basil chicken), and green curry. This is where I had my first Pad Thai of the trip.

Pad Thai, a popular street food in Thailand, at Bangkok’78 has chewy rice noodles with a perfect balance of tanginess and sweetness, accented by crunchy bean sprouts.

The head chef has worked at numerous high-end hotels. While Pad Thai can be found everywhere, it's hard for us living abroad to discern which ones are made with meticulous attention to detail. We can tell which sushi is crafted with precision, but our sense dulls with international cuisines.
By enjoying street food in a hotel restaurant, you can establish a standard for Thai cuisine and understand your taste preferences.

First, try the commonly eaten Thai dishes at Bangkok’78, form your own standards for Thai cuisine, and then venture into the street food scene. It could be an interesting journey.

After graduating from Tokyo University of Science, I worked at an IT company before specializing in Computer Science at the University of Tsukuba Graduate School. Due to work, I lived in Tochigi Prefecture for four years, which helped me realize the appeal of a moderately rural life. My hobby is cooking, and I'm currently obsessed with buying fresh fish from the fish markets in Odawara. I also publish daily vlogs on YouTube. Feel free to come and visit!
